Terry Fox, who was born in Winnipeg in 1958, was diagnosed with bone cancer at 18 years old, and had his leg amputated.
But that didn’t stop him from starting his Marathon of Hope, a cross-country journey to raise money for cancer research.

Though he wasn’t able to complete the journey, the process made him a national hero, and over $650 million dollars has been raised in his name.
He was the youngest person to be awarded the Order of Canada in 1981, shortly before his death.
