Highwaymen artist shares her story
Mary Ann Carroll, the only female highwaymen artist, discussed her craft and shared her experiences at the opening reception of the exhibit, "Beyond Expectations: Florida's Highwaymen," which runs through Feb.
"I never dreamed our work would become so popular, but I'm so glad," said Carroll, who started painting as a teenager in the 's in Ft. Pierce. Her mentor was Harold Newton, who is considered the founder of the "Highwaymen," a group of young African-American landscape artists living in the Fort Pierce area from the s through the s who sold their work on the roadside or out of the trunk of a car.
The opening reception included a gallery talk with Carroll and a panel discussion featuring Gainesville artists Ernest Lee and Alynne Harris, along with Nkwanda Jah, executive director of the Gainesville Cultural Arts Coalition.
